Jamestown Foundation Research Indicates ISIS Expanding Influence in Azerbaijan
A new report from the Jamestown Foundation indicates that ISIS is expanding its influence in Azerbaijan, confirmed by recent police arrests.
The research, published on March 14, highlights the arrest of three individuals by Azerbaijan police who were preparing an attack on the Israeli embassy in Baku. The suspects had received orders from ISIS-Khorasan based in Afghanistan, according to the report.
Following the arrests, ISIS organized and carried out attacks in Islamabad and Kabul. The Jamestown article specifically references an ISIS attack on a restaurant frequented by Chinese citizens in Kabul.
The report notes a significant history of arrests of ISIS affiliates in Azerbaijan, pointing to recent infiltration by the group. This development underscores ongoing concerns about jihadist groups gaining influence in neighboring countries including Kyrgyzstan, Turkey, and Uzbekistan.
