Poultry Production Expands in Helmand Province
Officials in Helmand province report that the local poultry sector is experiencing steady growth, driven by the operation of two active production facilities. Provincial authorities state that these factories currently generate 450,000 chicks each month, supplying approximately half of the region’s domestic poultry demand.
Mullah Nematullah Ansari, Director of Livestock and Animal Health at the Helmand Provincial Directorate of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock, said the expansion reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen local agricultural capacity. He noted that the increased output has reduced the province’s reliance on imported poultry products.
To support distribution and streamline sales, a specialized poultry market opened in Lashkar Gah last year. The facility centralizes trade and provides a structured environment for local producers and vendors.
Provincial officials indicated that further infrastructure development is planned to sustain the sector’s growth. The provincial directorate intends to establish additional poultry markets across several districts. These new centers aim to expand market access for farmers, stimulate local employment, and further integrate the poultry supply chain into regional commerce.
The development of the poultry industry aligns with broader provincial initiatives to promote food self-sufficiency and support rural livelihoods. Authorities continue to monitor production metrics to ensure stable supply chains for consumers.
