Missiles and Drones Target US Embassy in Baghdad, Iraqi Security Sources Say
BAGHDAD (Afghan Verified) -- Missiles and at least five drones targeted the US embassy compound in Baghdad early Tuesday, Iraqi security sources said.
Air defense systems intercepted two of the drones, while another struck inside the embassy, causing smoke and fire, according to Iraqi officials. Loud explosions were heard across the Iraqi capital, alarming residents.
Security sources indicated that Iran-backed armed groups were likely responsible for the attack. Such incidents have increased since the start of US and Israeli strikes linked to Iran, with the groups repeatedly targeting American facilities in Iraq.
The assault comes amid sharply escalating regional tensions involving Iran, the United States and its allies. Gulf states have urged Washington to take stronger action against Tehran's regional influence, warning of risks to broader Middle East stability.
No immediate casualties or further damage details were reported from the embassy compound.
