Afghan Media Group Reports Detention and Deportation of Journalists in Pakistan
The Afghanistan Media Support Organization (AMSO) issued a statement on 23 April 2026 reporting the recent detention and forced deportation of Afghan journalists working in Pakistan. According to the organization, Pakistani police have detained at least three journalists over the past two weeks. One female journalist, along with her family, has been forcibly returned to Afghanistan, while two other reporters remain in Pakistani custody.
In its statement, AMSO condemned the detentions and deportations, warning that the measures contravene international law and create security vulnerabilities for media workers. The organization emphasized that journalists covering events in Pakistan have faced increasing harassment, which it described as a direct threat to press freedom and personal safety.
AMSO has formally called on Pakistani authorities to immediately halt the detention and deportation of Afghan media personnel. The group also urged the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and international human rights organizations to intervene, monitor the situation, and ensure the protection of the detained journalists. The statement stressed that any forced returns must comply with established legal frameworks and safeguard the rights of those affected.
The report highlights ongoing concerns regarding the treatment of Afghan nationals residing in Pakistan, particularly those working in the media sector. AMSO indicated that it is documenting the cases and will continue to advocate for the safe release of the two journalists currently held in custody. No official response from Pakistani authorities or the detained individuals has been reported at this time.
